The work that has
definitely attracted the most
attention of visitors to the
Belgrade and Novi Sad exhibition
"Stories from the Vacuum Cleaner"
created within the project "Serbia
and Kosovo:Intercultural
Icebreakers" is the work "Freedom
700K" by artist Pajtim Paša from
Peći.
In fact, the work
is so-called "ready made art" and it
is a Freedom vacuum cleaner from
čačak, a 700K model that was present
in most households in Yugoslavia.
Even today, many households use it,
and the machine works flawlessly.
Pajtim borrowed the vacuum cleaner
from his aunt.
Pajtim Paša told
the story of a machine and a factory
that was bombed in 1999, questioning
the fact that "one machine outlived
the empire (as he described
Yugoslavia).“ Speaking to reporters
about this work, he drew attention
to the fact that he does not see
this vacuum cleaner nostalgically,
or as a symbol, but as proof that
together we can do great things that
benefit everyone.
An interesting
fact is that this exhibit got its
place in the current meme culture
and pop culture right after the
exhibition. Namely, the popular
Slavorum site, followed by almost a
million Facebook users from around
the world, has used this vacuum
cleaner to create their own content.
This site creates ironic and
humorous content that plays with
stereotypes from cultures of
Slovenian people. The photo of the
vacuum cleaner from the exhibition
was shared with the commentary
"Memories from childhood".
In this way,
Pajtim's exhibit survived the
exhibition it was designed for, thus
becoming part of the global pop
culture on the Internet.
