The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia
organized a seminar and theatre workshop for 20 high school students
from Belgrade and Novi Pazar between 14th and 19th of January 2018,
which was held at the Human Rights House in Belgrade. The seminar
was organized within the project “Play and Foster Youth for
Tolerance and Understanding” which aims to increase the knowledge of
young people in the field of human rights protection and encourages
them to engage in youth activism in the field of the suppression of
violent extremism.
The lecturers and workshop leaders were experts in
the field of political science, sociology, culture, the media, and
representatives of the civil society sector. Srđan Barišić, a
sociologist, who gave the lecture concerning „The notion of
extremism, radicalization, fundamentalism; Interreligious dialogue
versus clericalism”, spoke about the basic concepts of the topic and
contributed to the overcoming of the terminological confusion that
exists in this field. Pavel Domonji, a politicologist, spoke to the
young participants about “Multiculturalism versus ethnic
nationalism; Identity issue”. Jelena Visnjic, a politicologist,
presented the theme “Feminism vs. Patriarchy; marriage, family,
birth”. In the afternoon sessions, through conversations and plays
with theatre director Zlatko Pakovic, the aforementioned issues were
discussed from a different point of view.
During the seminar, a group visit to the
institution of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality was
also organized, where we were greeted by Commissioner Brankica
Jankovic and where the young could hear more about the work of this
institution. After this visit, we also visited the OSCE Mission to
Belgrade where the participants spoke with the representatives of
this institution after being greeted by head of the OSCE Mission to
Serbia Andrea Orizio.
After these events, young participants will
transfer the acquired knowledge to their schoolmates. To encourage
this process, five debates will be held in the student parliaments
of secondary schools in Belgrade and Novi Pazar.
The project is being implemented with the support
of the OSCE Mission to Serbia.
