”Film in Fascism / Fascism in Film”
9th and 15th April 2014, Parobrod
”Film in Fascism / Fascism in Film” is a project of the Belgrade Youth
Group of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia, which
focused on one of the most difficult historical periods. Films which
were produced during the fascist period were analyzed, as well as the
films whose topic is fascism. Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, Dr
Olivera Milosavljevic, lectured on 9 April 2014 about fascist regimes
and related propaganda films. Afterwards, the film “Triumph of the Will”
was shown at the cultural center “Parobrod”. This film was made by Leni
Riefenstahl and it is considered to be the most impressive propaganda
film of all times. It shows the 6th Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg and
several speeches delivered by Adolph Hitler.
On the second day of the project, 15 April 2014, film
theorist Dr Ivana Kronja analyzed several relevant examples of films
whose focus is on fascism. Her lecture also included contemporary films.
Michael Haneke’s “The White Ribbon”, a film which won Palme d’Or at the
Cannes Film Festival, was then shown to the audience. This film is set
in the period just before the beginning of World War One and it deals
with the origin of fascism, which Haneke calls “origin of evil”. More
than 90 persons attended the lectures and film projections.
