The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia
urges the police to urgently investigate the attack on Ruhan
Muharemi from Medveđa. According to his son, a group of 15 people
threw stones at his parents' house and cars on Saturday night while
singing nationalist songs.
This attack has greatly upset the local Albanian
population in the municipalities of Medveđa, Bujanovac and Preševo,
who fear that they will be exposed to vengeful attacks by extremists
following the events that occurred in Banjska.
Serbia’s institutions, primarily the police and
the prosecutor's office, must immediately react, arrest and
prosecute the attackers, as well as protect citizens of Albanian
nationality and prevent any escalation of ethnically motivated
violence in Serbia. For many years, Albanians in the three
municipalities in the south of Serbia have been exposed to various
measures of discrimination, including the passivization of their
residential address, on the basis of which they end up losing
numerous civil rights. Because of all this, they feel unsafe, and
now their physical safety has also been compromised.
