The latest attack on a female student of the
Faculty of Law, which could have been fatal, is just one in a series
of incidents endangering the lives of students. The authorities are
creating an atmosphere conducive to violence against students.
The violence perpetrated by groups or individuals
connected to the authorities fosters an atmosphere of fear and
insecurity among citizens. Furthermore, the fact that official
institutions, including the Security Information Agency (BIA) and
the police, deny responsibility for violent actions highlights
issues of transparency and accountability in the operations of
security services.
The most recent incident, which can be qualified
as an attempted murder, is evidence that the state, specifically the
police, is failing to perform its duties. The police are obligated
to ensure the security of gatherings, not to participate in violent
obstructions of legitimate student assemblies.
Had the police been present, this attempted murder
likely would not have occurred. The Helsinki Committee demands that
the police fulfill their legal obligations.
