Sandulovic: Alleged Case of Severe Police Brutality Highlights Judicial Concerns

Belgrade, January 10, 2024

A court lacking competence, acting on the request of an equally non-competent public prosecutor, has ordered the 30-day detention of Nikola Sandulovic. Due to the severity of his injuries, strongly suggesting police brutality, Sandulovic could not appear before the said court to address the grounds for his detention, as outlined in the motion presented by the non-competent public prosecutor.

The incident stems from Sandulovic's post on "X" (formerly Twitter), where he publicly shared placing flowers at the Adem Jashari Memorial Complex. He claimed to have sought forgiveness on behalf of Serbs who had no involvement in the deaths of innocents.

Sandulovic is formally suspected of instigating National, Racial and Religious Hatred and Intolerance.

There are strong suspicions that Sandulovic was badly beaten by secret service members before being formally taken into custody. The severity of his injuries was such that the doctors at the Belgrade Clinical Center noted that there is no possibility of transporting him over long distances.

In their motion for the detention of Sandulovic, the Public Prosecutors‘ Office stated there was a „geniuine possibility that the suspect was a flight risk“ (bed stricken as he was!) and that there were „indications that suspect will repeat the offence“!

The non-competent court justified the detention by citing the fear that the battered Sandulovic might tweet again and repeat the alleged offense.

Nikola Sandulovic's case serves as a stark illustration of the concerning state of our judicial system, highlighting a disregard for basic rights in criminal proceedings. It underscores the extent to which the state encroaches upon civil liberties guaranteed by the Constitution.
