Press release

Joint Communique Helsinki Committee in Serbia and Montenegrin Helsinki Committee

Podgorica, Beograd, 15 November 2022

The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia and the Montenegrin Helsinki Committee strongly condemn the orchestrated harangue and chase against Dr. Prof. Nikola Samardžić.

The regime of Aleksandar Vučić, which, in addition to the security and intelligence services and abused government structures, also consists of the controlled media, including the so-called “football fans”, groups and people from the mafia and criminal milieu, does not give up the sinister practice of targeting and persecuting anyone who has a critical attitude towards the policies he implements.

The current Serbian government's need for "internal enemies" and "enemies of the state", who dared to think and speak differently than the President, does not abate. The reason for this is simple: Vučić constantly needs enemies, his life is constantly threatened, and internal and international "conspiracies" prevent him from achieving his goals - which in everything, regardless of his propaganda and control of all government structures in Serbia - are the opposite of those that the international community has been expecting and looking for from him for years in vain.

The long and tragic list of journalists and intellectuals who paid the highest price for their involvement in Serbia - with their own lives - reminds us, in the most dramatic way, what and how can happen after the media chases and public name-calling that Nikola Samardžić is now exposed to.

That is why we expect the representatives of the international community to warn the President of Serbia in time to stop the sinister and dangerous attacks, for which he is the sole author and culprit.

Since controlled media in Serbia state that Dr. Samardžić, among other things, is an "apprentice and agent" of the President of Montenegro, we expect a clear determination regarding this case from that address as well.

Sonja Biserko, president of the Helsinki Committee in Serbia
Miodrag Vlahović, president of the Montenegrin Helsinki Committee
