The Civic Solidarity Platform, the Netherlands
Helsinki Committee, the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia
and humanrights.ch organized the Civil Society Thematic Workshop on
National Minorities in Belgrade. Workshop participants were
representatives of the civil society and experts in national minorities
from OSCE participating states, representatives of the Office of the
High Commissioner on National Minorities and OSCE Mission to Serbia,
representatives of the Task Forces of Serbian, German and Swiss OSCE
Chairmanships, embassies and other international institutions and
organizations.
The Bolzano/Bozen Recommendations on National
Minorities in Inter-State Relations and Ljubljana Guidelines on
Integration of Diverse Societies provided the starting point for the
discussion. Workshop participants spoke about the modalities for a
better implementation of recommendations for intercultural and
interethnic dialogue, and the importance of education for the
integration of national minorities. Panelists gave specific examples of
integration of national minorities in the countries of the Western
Balkans and South Caucasus.
Workshop participants had a very lively discussion,
which will be the basis for the documents on the protection of the
rights of national minorities that the Civic Solidarity Platform will be
working on in 2016. This will also be one of the priorities of the
German OSCE Chairmanship in the field of human rights.
Organization of the workshop was supported
by the OSCE Mission in Serbia and Foundation to Promote Open Society
(OSF).
