GRASSROOTS DIALOGUES IN SANDZAK: HELPING TO BRIDGE DIVIDES AND ARTICULATE THE REGION'S TRUE INTERESTS

The project focuses grassroots dialogues seeking to bridge the region's divides and articulate its true interests. More specifically, over four thematic workshops, one whole-day conference and a book of conference proceedings, it addresses political divides, religious tensions, gender equality (against the backdrop of traditional and conservative perception of the role of women) and entrepreneurship (spiraling down after the economic boom in 1990s). Those concerns are the more so important when bearing in mind the avenues for progress and emancipation SAA opens to Serbia and all its regions. The project's target groups are: local parliamentarians, including those of the two major Bosniak opposing parties; representatives of religious communities (Islamic and Serbian Eastern Orthodox); women involved in the region's social, economic and political life; local entrepreneurs; representatives of local CSOs; and members of Sandzak's intelligentsia. The project final beneficiaries are: all factors/players in the region's political, social and economic life; religious communities; civil society as a whole; authorities at the republican level concerned with security issues, Activities and more adequate political arrangements for the region, including decentralization; international factors concerned with confidence-building, crisis-prevention and crisis-management in South East Europe. By initiating dialogues that seek to bridge political, social and religious divides in Sandzak and bringing together stakeholders that best reflect those divides, the project seeks to contribute to democratic political participation and representation, as well as to peaceful conciliation of group interests, to combat discrimination on gender and ethnic grounds and to build up the region's energy for positive change.

This 18-month program is realized with the assistance of the Delegation of the European Commission to Serbia under the EuropeAid program.
